The International Center for Hadron Astrophysics at Chiba University
is a research center dedicated to gaining a clear understanding
of ultra-high-energy neutrinos from deep within the Antarctic ice
through "IceCube Project", and exploring the origins of the universe.
For this project, we designed a common area within the research center as a venue for researchers from around the world to gather for public discussions. Inspired by the way tiny particles in outer space are drawn by gravity and form circular orbits, a circular bench named “Donut” was placed at the center to symbolize centripetal force and the core of the space.
Centered around this circle, the common area contains a kitchen, work area, lounge, and storage area, all arranged radially. Surrounding these are individual offices for each researcher, creating a gradual transition from public to private spaces.
Comprising twenty-four movable units, Donut is designed to maximize spatial flexibility. It can organically adapt its form to accommodate all activities at the center, from individual work and lively study group discussions to seminars, workshops, and social gatherings.
Unbound by fixed layouts, this space is constantly renewing itself in response to the researchers’ activities.
Furthermore, considering cost-effectiveness and sustainability, the common area is designed with ample blank space, allowing for flexible adaptation to the Center's future changes.
When it came to materials and textures, we believed that the physical research base should possess an “earthly feel” and a “fundamental sense of comfort,” in contrast to the seemingly inorganic world of cutting-edge astrophysics, which primarily deals with digital data.
The color scheme throughout the common area is unified around warm tones, and by using textured chair upholstery and a wall finish with subtle, earth-like irregularities, we aimed to create a cozy atmosphere. The large curtains separating the common area from the individual rooms simultaneously protect faculty members' privacy, hide miscellaneous storage areas, and create a soft atmosphere and rhythm throughout the entire lab.
